Dress up your personal oasis with surprising neutrals, warm tans, and washed brights.
Ready to refresh the first space you see in the morning and the last you experience before falling asleep each night? Lean toward soothing paint colors, from soft greens to unobtrusive neutrals, to create a rest-ready room in the new year. “Cool hues and neutral color tones are often chosen as overall bedroom colors because of their power to calm a space, offering a sanctuary for relaxation,” says Erika Woelfel, vice president of color and creative services at Behr. Ahead, discover some of the bedroom paint color trends that are pulling away from the pack in 2022.
While experts expect green to be a dominant color throughout the home in 2022, it’s especially appropriate for your sleeping space. “Greens are perennial favorites for bedrooms for their tranquil, relaxing association to nature,” says Arianna Cesa, Benjamin Moore associate manager of color marketing and development. “For many people, bedrooms can be seen as a personal retreat, a place to unwind, and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.”
Green may not be the first shade that comes to mind when you think of a neutral background color, but just like in the great outdoors, where shades of green pair with everything from sapphire oceans and bright marigolds to dark brown tree bark and eggplant-colored autumn leaves, it offers remarkable adaptability. “For a calming, nurturing, space, try October Mist or Gloucester Sage,” suggests Woelfel. “These colors are extremely versatile, allowing you to bring in bolder pops of colors through décor and accessories or play into their soothing qualities with creamy whites and neutrals.”
Recommit to neutrals.
Traditional neutrals never go out of style, and this year, says Woelfel, try “warm earth tones” like Behr’s Studio Clay, Basswood, and Perfect Penny. “The beauty of a neutral palette is that you are able to explore your personal sense of design and are able to integrate a variety of materials, patterns, and finishes to suit your style,” she says. “A versatile background color also makes way for brighter accent colors to create a focal point. A bright throw pillow in an interesting texture may draw attention to a beautifully made bed. A stroke of unexpected color in an area rug or artwork may help a space feel more intimate and personal.”
Choose reflective pales.
Between bold brights and classic neutrals comes a collection of washed tones that add a dose of your favorite color to your space without shocking your eyes. “For consumers looking for more whimsical, expressive color choices, luminous pales can help to inspire and invigorate the senses—they offer the perfect way to wake up in the morning,” says Cesa. “Refreshing lilacs and leafy greens are lighthearted, playful, and can be delightfully sophisticated in a bedroom setting. These colors appeal to the quiet, meditative, balanced styles of some, while also creating an opportunity for the bolder, more creative design choices of others.” Woelfel recommends a similar approach: “If you are looking to experiment with more playful, invigorating pales, try Hint of Violet and Fernwood Green,” she says. “These hues enliven a space with their effortless whimsy and charm.”
